I don't understand how I'm supposed to get a 4x4 when I can only place 3 pieces per fight (edit: ohhh, after area 1)

When does the joust get charged?

It gets one charged at the start of a fight.

this game challenged my chess knowledge, love it !!

Hi dev! A really good game! I did a livestream on it and really enjoyed it! Been grinding a lot and found a bug that i think you would like to fix. First after beating the game two times, the go back to title screen button doesn’t show! So you have to reopen the game which is fine but it would be better to have the title screen button. I think there were more bugs but can’t remember. Probably features lol. Anyway thanks for making this game!

game looks very great; but i have a very big problem, i am unable to disable post processing, and my game is ALMOST unplayable, but im really dizzy from playing this because of the insane lag, i think a option to disable post processing before starting the game would be good, still very great idea and game, love the graphics

(+1)

There is barely any post processing in the game. I do not think what you are calling post processing is the issue ! Maybe it is a browser issue and the download version runs better! (Are you sure it's my game you're talking about? I'm curious as to what is going on)

yes! downloading the game  worked fine, the post processing i meant is the chromatic aberration effect, that commonly causes fps issues for me, thank you!

(+2)

Cool concept and nicely polished pixel art style!

(+1)

Awesome !! Such a good game, and i see it's a Jam concept, really good job ;)

(+1)

Very interesting game! I loved the way you introduced the mechanics of the game!

(+1)

Very Cool Game, But as the Queen, I soloed the entire game (except last level ;) )

(+1)

I have to admit - it took me a moment to understand what's been happening but once I got the idea of it everything just clicked. It was a hard and fun game with great visuals, amazing!

This looks very cool, I'm downloading now, FYI its showing up as black screen for me on web but I hear sounds

This is the first time i'm hearing this. The game pauses when it's unfocused maybe it's that. Otherwise may be a browser issue?

Yep it was a browser issue don't mind me.  Awesome game btw!

(+1)

this is so cool!

(+1)

This is definitely one of the best jam games I've ever played. I can definitely see this being a viable commercial game. Loves playing it!

(+1)

Very cool concept, and really impressive amount of polish. I would love to see this idea get developed further. Visuals and gameplay are pretty good.

*Note: take my criticism with a side of salt, I only played about 10 minutes of the game, before getting softlocked, so my points may be invalid for later portions of the game. I will come back to this in the future and update this review if necessary*

Points of criticism:

--> Maybe I haven't gotten far enough but I'm not sure what the theme connection was?

--> Enemy pieces appear to only move when they can take one of your pieces. Maybe it gets more difficult later on but many levels are very easy to beat by choosing a piece that can attack enemies without getting inside their line of attack and slowly whittle them down, at the cost of the par bonus

--> I found a softlock while playing, conditions are placing a piece that can't move due to board state, hitting fight, and having no money to reset. If there was a way to get out of this softlock I could not find it.

Overall rating 4/5 stars-Theme was weak imo which is an important part of it for me, and there were some issues I had with it, but the neat concept, gameplay, and visuals really impressed me, especially considering the time limit. Would love to see it expanded on

I am not good at chess, but this game is so good. So many levels and interresting stuff. Really nice, good job!

(+1)

it is so big that it will take so time to complete. no bad things found you get 5 stars in each NGL

(+1)

This is awesome. You did a great job.

(+1)

so polished and so fun, in just 2 weeks, amazing!

(+1)

Beat it!  The nerf on the Queen's ability was badly needed, but it's still kinda trivial a lot of the time once you get enough Charge and Bloodlust stacks (whether via vampire assassins or passive abilities)

Queens are too strong. I think pirate is the hardest one, and pawn I want to play more. But I made the game a bit too easy maybe? I didn't have enough feedbacks and prefered to settle on an easier version!

Fair enough.  Yeah, I think the enemy not being allowed to move except to capture and forced to capture when able limits the difficulty a bit much, but overall the game is still fun :)

The color scheme is cool and all, but can you make the enemies more obvious? like a different color / brightness or contrast? the white outlines are good but not enough in my opinion.

(+3)

I forced myself to use only 4 colors in the entire game, and things are not always clear, I agree.
If I had to pursue developping the game I would go with 8 colors and use separate color schemes for the chess pieces. And a fancy checkered ground maybe? Not sure !

(+1)

I think if you continue working on it after the jam and releasing it as a completed game it can be a hit, such creative puzzles and it's really expandable. I'd buy it :)

(+2)

I think this has a lot of potential to become a full release, feels like a very fresh concept

I feel that way as well !It's not there yet, but it could be fun to expand!

(+1)

Really fun game even for me who doesnt know how to play chess

(+1)

I might be missing something but I think I managed to softlock myself, I spent all money in the shop so I couldn't reset then in the next fight I ended up with only a bishop and all the enemy units were on squares it couldn't get to.

(1 edit) (+1)

This is the issue of the game right now, there isn't a clear game over condition. When you cannot beat a fight, you should lose. I didn't find an elegant solution for this, apart from trying to solve the board by code ?

Some other solutions would be to have a hard 20 turn limit, or try to detect a stalemate, but both of these solution implies the player to deliberately do the actions for that.

Some other other solutions would be to lose if you get under a certain piece threshold.

I take suggestions on this if anyone has a cool way to do it !

You could probably implement the three/fivefold repetition rule (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Threefold_repetition#Fivefold_repetition) fairly easily, you just need to record the boardstate at the end of each turn and then end the game if it repeats 3/5 times.

(+1)

Yep ! But still that is a frustrating feeling for the player, it doesn't feel that good to end on that note. I think the core ideas of the game are great and neat and fun but this part is yet to be figured out (and I will not do any major rewrites before tomorrow i'm too scared of breaking stuff !)

I got pretty far but then a level happened where there were no spawn points allowed at all, so I softlocked.  The level was called "Giant Grounds" and was room 6/6 of the ?third? set of rooms.

Thank you so much for your feedback and for playing this far, I'm very sorry this has happened to you and i'm a bit mad at myself. I will push a fix asap. You were so close ! One room before the end. I'm very pissed for you

(+1)

I tripled check all levels and this one got duplicated by accident, it's the only one without spawnpoints in the entire 40 levels and you got it. I'm so so sorry...

It's all good, I'll play it again some time :)
